Luke is a 1 year old black lab mix. The above is his shelter picture. Luke is suffering from fleas dermatitis and neglect. You know what? At Barrow AC, it was Luke who outshined all the others. Why? Because he was H A P P Y and it showed ~ Showed in all the tail wags, all the paw lifts and all the smiles as the Vols greeted him daily. Because they spoke to him, petted him and told him he was a good boy. Fed him sweet biscuits and kissed the top of his head. Lifted his legs and looked on in tears. Luke is a reminder of why we do what we do. Underneath this neglected coat, lies the heart and soul of a young dog who has known little and offers so much. He's at our Vets now and his tail thumps and echoes down the hall as she approaches - the sweetest sound, his way of thanking us. Her heart swells in return.
Black dogs like Luke may be a dime a dozen, but they are diamonds in the rough with hearts of gold. It is never lost on us as we dote on our own dogs at home, to remember Luke and others like him, with paws crossed in hope.
